The new European Parliament will increase from 705 to 720 MEPs and Portugal will continue to be represented by 21, after the elections on June 9th. But, after all, how much does a MEP earn?

The gross salary is set at 10,075.42 euros per month, totaling 7,853.89 euros net, reported the Euronews. In most Member States, an additional national tax is charged.

To manage expenses with computers, telephones, conference organization, income and office supplies, MEPs receive an allowance deposited directly into their personal bank accounts and are not required to reveal how they spent the money.

When they leave office, they will receive a subsidy equivalent to one month’s salary for each year of office, for a maximum period of two years, until they take on another position.

Reimbursement of travel expenses for European Parliament meetings, subject to the presentation of receipts, can reach a maximum annual amount of 4,940 euros for activities outside the country of origin.

For each day in Brussels, MEPs receive a fixed allowance of 350 euros to cover accommodation and meal expenses.

The budget for the recruitment and salaries of personal assistants is 28,696 euros per month, but close family members are not allowed.

All MEPs’ medical expenses are reimbursed by two-thirds.

The pension, at age 63, is funded by the European Union budget and is equivalent to 3.5% of the salary for each full year of office, but cannot exceed 70% in total.
