The IV National Enological Competition “Cities of Wine” will take place in Gouveia, from May 9th to 12th, 2024.

During these four days, a panel of judges, chaired by António Ventura and made up of thirty members, will be in Gouveia, evaluating wines from Municipalities across the national territory. In addition to the competition and other institutional moments, the event will feature several initiatives aimed at the public.

Therefore, on May 10th (Friday), a visit and wine dinner will take place at Quinta Madre de Água. The program includes a visit to Quinta Madre de Água, starting at 6pm, followed by a wine dinner,
where a mushroom cream will be served, followed by “Brás de Bacalhau” as the main dish,
paired with Dão Wines – Serra da Estrela.

On Saturday, the 11th, at 10 am, an Interpretive Walk will take place called “Biodiversity
das Vinhas do Dão – Serra da Estrela”.

The initiative takes place at Quinta da Espinhosa, in Vila Nova de Tazem and is aimed at all food lovers
and curious about the themes of wine and vineyards, the genetic heritage of this Dão region.

On the last day of the event, Sunday, May 12th, it will take place at 3 pm at Quinta da Ponte Pedrinha,
a round table on “The sustainability of Dão winemaking in a context of changes
climate change”, moderated by Pedro Rodrigues, professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu who has
dedicated his research work to the water relations of the vine, the study of grape varieties and the effects of climate change and with a panel that will feature the presence of Vanda Pedroso, senior technician at the Centro de Estudos Vitivinícola do Dão (CCDRC), with 42 years of professional activity dedicated to research and experimentation in viticulture in Dão; by Cristina Amaro da Costa, researcher in the area of ​​plant protection, agroecology and sustainable food systems, focusing on family farming, women farmers and the valorization of ecosystem services; by Luís Marcos, General Director of ADVID / CoLAB Vines & Wines, Technical Association, managing entity of the Vine and Wine Sector Competitiveness Cluster and Collaborative Laboratory for the Vine and Wine sector; by Luís Almeida Sousa, responsible for Casa Américo Wines, for around 10 years, for all processes that range from vineyard maintenance to grape harvesting, reconciling the enhancement of volumes and quality of grapes produced, with the implementation of practices sustainability and preservation of wine heritage and Pedro Pereira, a winemaker for over 27 years, developed his professional career in several producers in the Dão region, especially in the Serra da Estrela sub-region.

He is a member of the CVRDão Tasting Chamber and jury in several national and international wine competitions.

To conclude the program, from 5pm onwards, a commented tasting will take place under the theme “The elegance of Dão in Serra da Estrela”, by Mafalda Perdigão, winemaker at Quinta do Perdigão and Casa Ruy and responsible for the “Enoteller” project.

The “Wine Cities” competition is a joint organization of the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities (AMPV) and the Association of Wine Routes of Portugal (ARVP), with the support of the Gouveia City Council and the Wine in Moderation program, counting with the high Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic.
