One of cinema’s most iconic sci-fi films is back – with one of Hollywood’s favorite actors.

In 2007, humanity was on the brink of extermination, and Professor Robert Neville (Will Smith) seemed to be the only survivor on the face of the Earth, forced to take refuge against the zombies and terrifying monsters that lurked in the night.

This was the story we met in I Am Legend, by Francis Lawrence, which was released more than a decade ago and left us with a large number of questions that, fortunately, will soon be answered with the release of the sequel.

A sequel with more than 10 years of waiting

Since 2007, millions of people have wanted a different ending for Will Smith, in which Dr. Neville could save humanity, or at least avenge it. Although it is already known that the sequel will take place several decades later, the starting point of the new film is still unclear at the moment.

Just like the first, the plot of I Am Legend 2 will be taken from the book of the same name by Richard Matheson, placing Robert in a different fight between good and evil that, despite being more complex, leads the doctor to a very important discovery about the leader of the infected.

Will Smith’s character would have become a monster in the eyes of the colony of survivors for abandoning his search for a cure. Additionally, the new film even includes Michael B. Jordan in the cast – although his role is not fully defined.

An important resurrection

Although in the first installment Will Smith dies, in the new production scientists recovered the DNA of the uninfected and managed to recreate it. Therefore, to make the sequence viable, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman resorted to the alternative ending of the story, presented in the Blu-ray/DVD extras of the first film.

“Warners really wanted another movie, but I didn’t see what we could do. I thought about it and came to the conclusion that people wanted to see the last man on Earth, so we showed them the last man on Earth,” Akiva explained about Robert Neville’s resurrection.

Despite new updates on the film’s progress, points such as director and release date still remain, so far, a mystery.
