Civil War is one of A24’s big bets, and one of the studio’s biggest films, which wants to venture into bigger productions, even today. In terms of budget, this is the brand’s most expensive project, costing US$75 million, more than Beau’s Afraid’s US$55 million.

In the film, set in a near alternative future, 19 of the 50 American states secede from the Union and form the Florida Alliance, which leads to an armed conflict between the United States army, these new independent forces and the Western Forces, a two-state coalition between Texas and California. We follow a group of photojournalists trying to survive, document and report the chaos.

The film will star Kirsten Dunst (Attack of the Dogs) next to Wagner Moura (Narcos), in which a pair of photojournalists try to record the conflict. The cast also features Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) and Jesse Plemons (Attack of the Dogs).

Alex Garland is the director and screenwriter, making this film his third collaboration with A24. Together with the studio, the British filmmaker also released Ex Machina and the horror film Men: Faces of Fear.

Civil War premieres on April 12th in the United States. As the A24 only operates there, the Diamond Filmswhich brought studio titles such as Beau is Afraid here, took over distribution in Brazil, and will release it in national cinemas on April 18, 2024.
