Steven Spielberg was one of the many viewers of “Dune – Dune: Part Two” and was full of praise when he joined its director, Denis Villeneuve, on a recent episode of the “DGA’s Director’s Cut” podcast.

“This is truly a visual epic and it is also filled with deeply drawn characters. However, the dialogue is very sparse when looking proportionately at the length of the film. It is great cinema. The shots are so painterly, but there is no angle or a single plot that is pretentious… you made one of the most brilliant science fiction films I have ever seen”, said the legendary filmmaker of classic genre films such as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “ET”.

One scene stood out: Paul (Timothée Chalamet) riding a sandworm for the first time.

“There’s a great desire for water in this film. For all the sand in this film, it’s really about water – the sacred waters you long for; green meadows and the blue water of life. You filmed the desert to look like an ocean, a sea. The sandworms were like sea serpents and that scene [de Paul] Surfing the sandworm is one of the best things I’ve ever seen”, he praised.

At the beginning of the podcast, Spielberg told Villeneuve that he belonged to a restricted group of great directors of the fantasy genre who built worlds, starting by citing Georges Méliès before mentioning Walt Disney, Stanley Kubrick, Ray Harryhausen, George Lucas, Federico Fellini, Tim Burton , Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott and Guillermo del Toro.

“The list goes on, but it’s not that long, and I deeply and fervently believe that you are one of its new members,” said Spielberg.
