‘extremistas.br’: series coming to Globoplay investigates what led some Brazilians to defend anti-democratic speeches

The documentary “extremistas.br” won the award for best film in defense of human rights at the One World Film Festival. The awards ceremony was held this Thursday (28) in Prague.

All episodes of the series are available on Globoplay.

The One World festival is the largest focusing on human rights in Europe.

The director of the series, Caio Cavechini, was at the awards ceremony, which was attended by the president of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel.

“It was very interesting to see how radicalization in Brazil generated curiosity and even a shock among the foreign public,” said Cavechini. “Some follow the news, but many came to comment that they had no idea of the depth of polarization, its various fronts and its mechanisms. ”

“It is an honor that the jury chose our documentary over so many other impactful films. And it is also a source of pride for this team that spent two years immersed in such a difficult political environment”;

Produced by Globo journalism, “extremistas.br” shows how extremism has taken over the radical right in Brazil and the reasons that lead thousands of Brazilians to spread coup speeches.

The production dives into events that marked the debate about attacks on democracy during the last government and was updated after the acts of terrorism on Sunday (8).

For the documentary, experts and researchers who monitor this behavior were interviewed and the team followed well-known characters from national politics, unlikely political actors, rising digital influencers, repentant activists and unknown voters.

“extremistas.br” is directed by Caio Cavechini, who also wrote the script along with Carlos Juliano Barros, Carol Pires and Eliane Scardovelli. The production features reports by Henrique Picarelli, Marcelo Junior, Diogo André, Mayara Teixeira, Caue Angeli and Carolline Leite.
