When it comes to alien invasions, there’s no avoiding War of the Worlds. The science fiction classic written by HG Wells tells the story of hostile aliens who come from Mars to attack Earth.

The novel has been adapted several times over the years. But one of them, that of Orson Welles, from 1938, managed to mark a before and after with its adaptation into a radio play in which many people really believed that aliens were invading the planet.

However, the scariest version of the story comes from Steven Spielberg. The American director is very familiar with the science fiction genre with works such as Minority Report – The New Law or AI – Artificial Intelligence.

In ET: The Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the filmmaker brought aliens to Earth before his film adaptation of Worlds War. However, Spielberg’s version ends up being a disturbing mix of horror film and catastrophe. Little by little, Earth becomes an absolute nightmare place covered in fields of blood.

10 big Netflix premieres in April

For a blockbuster of this magnitude, Spielberg finds surprisingly dark images. He also judges his characters harshly. When protagonist Ray Ferrier, played by Tom Cruise, tries to save his family from death, one human abyss after another is revealed.

Worlds War is available on Prime Video.
