Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is already in the works.
It took 36 years for the sequel to the famous film starring Tom Cruise in the 1980s, Top Gun, to be released in 2022. The wait was finally worth it: Top Gun: Maverick enchanted fans (and even even those who weren’t fans) of the film directed by Tony Scott (who didn’t live to see it), and it became one of the biggest cinematic successes of that year. In fact, only Avatar: The Way of Water surpassed it as the highest-grossing film of the year.
Although announced in 2010, almost 25 years after the first 1986 film, the sequel was left in the drawer after Scott’s death and was only resumed in 2017, with Joseph Kosinski as director. Top Gun: Maverick was scheduled to be filmed between 2018 and 2019, but the Covid-19 pandemic caused constant delays that only made its release possible in 2022.
After the success of the second film, the possibility of a third part was soon considered. At first it was just speculation, but in recent weeks we’ve learned that these are definitely Paramount Pictures’ plans.
Jerry Bruckheimer, the film’s producer, confirmed to ScreenRant that they have an idea for Top Gun 3 and that the intention is for Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski to return as protagonist and director, respectively. “It will be with Tom Cruise. Tom is incredible. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful idea for the story and he [Cruise] He said he liked it, so we’re developing it,” he said.

Top Gun 3: Release date
As it has not yet been officially announced, Top Gun 3 does not have a release date.
The script writing process is in its early stages and will take time. After that, a casting phase and a pre-production phase will begin so that everything is ready for filming to begin.

Top Gun 3: Who’s Returning and Who’s Not
It wouldn’t make sense otherwise and, as confirmed, the plan is for Tom Cruise to return as Captain Pete Maverick Mitchell. However, his busy schedule promises to play an important role in the start of filming. Likewise, the idea is that Miles Teller and Glen Powell will also return with their characters.
At the moment, the cast is not confirmed, but other possible returns include Jennifer Connelly as Penny, Maverick’s love interest, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer and the long list of actors and actresses from the second film, although we can also bet on new hires.
Another option would be for actors from the original film who did not participate in the sequel to return.
