To get this message and awareness across, Hugo Almeida, in addition to interviews, makes use of aerial images that portray the current state of this unsustainable footprint, as well as graphs and data, such as the fact that humans represent 0.01 of all life on earth and being responsible for the destruction of more than 80% of wild mammals. Shocking images are also presented of the way the livestock industry operates and what it does to animals.

Says Hugo Almeida: “Our objective has always been to develop content capable of captivating, whilst still showing the reality of today in Europe, including Portugal, that could be accessible to all interested parties”.

“Meat: The Unsustainable Footprint” has already received international recognition and won awards. After being nominated for best Portuguese film of the year at the Fantasporto 2024, has now been awarded the award for best documentary by Frankfurt Indie Stars Film Festival.

Speaking to the press, Francisco Guerreiro said that “this award is an honor for everyone who participated in the project, but what we truly hope is that it will help give it even more visibility and, in this way, make it known to more and more people.”

The main messages of “Meat: The Unsustainable Footprint” are: humans are killing animals and animals are killing humans and that the true act of rebellion is to transition to a plant-based diet, removing power from the agri-food industry and changing culture so that future generations do not make the same mistakes as the past

The documentary can now be seen, free of charge, on the WaterBearde platform.
