35 years separate the two versions of the film.
35 years ago, in Matador de Aluguel, Patrick Swayze gave an unprecedented aura to the role of “security” with the character James Dalton, responsible for restoring order to a disreputable bar. In 2024, Jake Gyllenhaal follows in his footsteps in front of Doug Liman’s cameras with a new version of Hit Man available on Prime Video.
The remake takes up the main lines of the original, in particular its modern Western approach, its solitary and legendary hero who carries the image of an invincible fighter (and also a dark trauma), and its evil villain or local tycoon who dominates the local landowners and corrupts the police.
But there are some notable differences in the 2024 version. The Zen fighter has been replaced by a UFC veteran, the long turtlenecks and tight jeans of the late ’80s have given way to more modern cuts and floral shirts, and the production design gives a very different vibe to the feature film. Above all, there is one big change: the name of the bar where Dalton works.
In the 1989 film, the establishment was called “Double Deuce”. The 2024 version does not follow the original name, but more attentive viewers may notice that the film plays with this idea: the name “Double Deuce” can be seen at the beginning of the plot, on the facade of the restaurant next to the bookstore where the character from Gyllenhaal talks to a young woman and her father. A little easter egg for fans of the version with Swayze.
