It is not new that South Korean cinema has been surprising Western audiences. Since ‘Parasite‘ won several awards a few years ago and the series ‘Round 6‘ got its foot in the first position of the most watched in Netflix For weeks in many countries, the global public realized that South Korean productions had come to gain a definitive space in global projections.

In between dramas exciting and k-pop groups that dominate the young universe, the South Korea has demonstrated a strong investment in promoting its own culture on many fronts, especially in the art of entertainment. And the country’s new success is ‘Survivors – After the Earthquake‘, a surprising dramatic suspense held in the southern part of Korea, which debuted in fifth place among Prime Video’s most watched titles.

Check out the trailer, dubbed and subtitled:

Min-sung (Park Seo-joonin ‘Parasite‘) wakes up confused next to his wife, Myunghwa-won (Park Bo-young). When she gets up, she realizes that an earthquake has occurred and that everything around her is completely destroyed. Even worse: the entire city of Seoul is completely destroyed, and the only building that remained standing was precisely condominium 103, where Min-sung It is Myunghwa-won live. The building quickly becomes surrounded by survivors from the region, who ask for shelter there. As the days go by, the scarcity of food and the emergence of small interpersonal conflicts lead to a split between the condominium owners, and the rise of Yeong-tak (Lee Byung-hun) as head of the condominium owners causes very strict rules to be established, which some residents are not willing to agree to.

Despite being a little over two hours long, ‘Survivors – After the Earthquake‘ is quite objective in its development: it begins by giving an overview of real estate speculation in Seoul (shown during the opening credits), then the earthquake occurs super-fast so that, in a couple of minutes, the plot is already in place to focus on developing just the characters – which gives us approximately two hours of plot twists to follow.

The script for Tae-hwa Eom (who also directs the film) with Lee Shin-ji It is Kim Soong-nyung part of that “zombie apocalypse” theme but without the zombies. In other words, after the end of the apocalyptic world (the entire city was destroyed due to the earthquake), how do human beings behave? What are the possible happy endings within a bleak scenario? Thus, the film has much more to do with the twists and turns that the characters themselves will create for themselves than any external threat (as is the case with the zombies), which makes the plot much more interesting, just like the series Of success ‘The Others‘, thriller which also takes place in a condominium. It’s a shame, however, that the Brazilian version didn’t keep the original title.”Concrete Utopia” (in free translation, Concreto Utópico), which has much more to do with the heart of the plot.

Don’t forget to watch:

With Park Ji-hufrom the seriesAll Of Us Are Dead‘, ‘Survivors – After the Earthquake‘ is reinforced by top quality special effects, exquisitely recorded action scenes and a script that doesn’t let the story fall into the same thing and shows the dark side and the light side of human beings in adverse conditions. Until literally the end, the film makes you bite your nails, until it presents a beautiful and emotional final scene. ‘Survivors – After the Earthquake‘ is a great film and one that needs to be seen.
