Production with Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Over the weekend, Francis Ford Coppola released the first teaser for Megalopolis, a science fiction film awaited for decades in Hollywood. At just over two minutes, the preview introduces Adam Driver’s character to a reimagined New York.

At the top of a building, the actor seems uncertain about his choices as he approaches the cliff. When he steps forward, he freezes time and everything around him – from the clouds in the sky to the cars on the street below. With a snap of your fingers, life returns.

It is interesting that in these few minutes of recording, it is possible to see important details about the upcoming project. The visual work, which must be one of the most striking points of the film, already suggests that Megalopolis has a strong mix of urban aspects with surrealism. Furthermore, the sound present in the video already anticipates a great soundtrack.

Inspired by One Hundred Years From Now, a science fiction film released in 1936, the film follows an architect who wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia after a devastating disaster. Featuring Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire and Jason Schwartzman, the project is described as “an epic set in modern times.”

Netflix: This sci-fi masterpiece had to be rewritten more than 100 times to get the perfect script

Scheduled to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this month, the film had an investment of 120 million dollars coming directly from the filmmaker’s pocket. During an interview with Vanity Fairthe director explained that he wasn’t necessarily writing the film 40 years ago, but rather doing a kind of pre-production research, “collecting notes and clippings for a scrapbook of things I found interesting for some future script.”

“Ultimately, after a long time, I decided on the idea of a Roman epic. And later, a Roman epic set in modern America, so I’ve only really started writing that script, on and off, for the last dozen years or so. Also, as I have made many films on many different themes and styles, I was hoping to have a project later in life when I could better understand what my personal style was.”

“It’s epic and incredible”: The most ambitious sci-fi film in history receives a standing ovation

“Early on, I remember one time I took 130 blank pages and slapped on a title page boldly announcing ‘Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis’ and beneath it, ‘All Roads Lead to Rome.’ I pretended it wasn’t completely blank, weighing it in my hands so I could imagine what it would be like one day and believe that one day it could exist. Later, after I had a draft, I must have rewrote it 300 times, hoping that each rewrite would make it better, even if only half a percent better.”

There is still no scheduled release date on the commercial circuit, but with a likely release between the second half of the year and the beginning of 2025, Megalopolis will be shown at the Cannes Festival, on May 17th.
