First of all, the obvious: we are all innocent until proven (legal) otherwise. Being investigated does not make us criminals, it means allowing Justice to be served, that of the courts, that of men is what we know: emotional and dubious. So often dangerous.
If José Castelo Branco is a danger to “his” Betty, it is up to the police to investigate. But, if it’s true, the film is exactly the same as any Maria or any José: suddenly many would know about episodes of violence, the stories emerge (only now) in a rush. It took the alleged victim – a 95-year-old woman – to finally find her voice. Why were all the others silent?
The crime of domestic violence continues to follow the same sad story: everyone remains silent until the worst happens. There are those who end up in a hospital bed or, to quote Sérgio Godinho, “even more lying down, let the gravedigger say so”. The victims are beautiful and ugly, poor and rich, educated and illiterate. Violence is ironically democratic.
The fame of one and the other made this story the cover of the newspaper. But there are many more Marys and many more Josephs. I don’t remember there being many arrests of alleged attackers. Being famous has a price, José Castelo Branco’s may well be serving as an example.
The clients of Portuguese Cristiano Pinheiro are also famous. He has tattooed football players and music and television stars. Now he has opened a studio in Esch-sur-Alzette.
