20th Century Studios has announced a reboot of The Maze Runner film series, 10 years after the release of the original.

The films were based on the dystopian books by James Dashner (Maze Runner – Book 1: Run or Die / Maze Runner – Book 2: Trials by Fire / Maze Runner – Book 3: The Death Cure) and this reboot will feature the director of the trilogy original, Wes Ball, as producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has entered preliminary discussions with Transcendence writer Jack Paglen to write the new script. Wes Ball’s production team will be joined by Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman, and Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, who also produced the original series.

Despite mixed reviews, The Maze Runner films proved to be a huge success in theaters; With a total budget of $157 million, the trilogy grossed $949 million worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing film series based on young adult books.

According to sources, the reboot is neither a retelling of the story nor a direct sequel to the original trilogy; the objective is to make a kind of continuation of the story, but also to return to the elements that made the first film so successful.
