Kristen Stewart, known for her roles in prominent films such as “Love Lies Bleeding” (2024) and “Twilight” (2008), makes her debut as a director with a challenging project. The film, based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir “The Chronology of Water,” brings to the screen themes of incest and menstruation, presenting a narrative that Stewart describes as “sometimes difficult to watch.”

Deep adaptation project

Yuknavitch’s work is a visceral exploration of gender, sexuality, violence and family, narrated by a former swimmer turned artist. The film promises to delve into the extreme challenges faced by the protagonist, from her sexual development to her struggles with addiction and self-destruction, culminating in a rediscovery through love and motherhood.

Voice of the Body

During an interview with PORTER magazine, Stewart shared insights into the film’s direction. She highlighted the importance of the narrative, mentioning that it is “about a woman violently taking back her voice and body.” The director emphasizes that while the film promises to be a “thrill ride,” it is also confronting and powerful.

Perspective from a new director

Stewart also reflected on his transition into directing. After years of interpreting other directors’ visions, she now embraces the opportunity to shape her own stories. She expressed a mix of excitement and nervousness about the new responsibility, noting that driving is “a bit of an awkward thing to talk about” due to the challenges it entails.

Preparations for production are underway, with filming planned in Latvia. Stewart highlighted the need for a “radical break” from her pre-established identity as an actress, mentioning that this project is like a “student film” for her, something essential for her evolution as a creator.

“I think people would like to see that, but… I think maybe people want to watch movies about Jesus and dogs,” Stewart said, provoking reflection on the public’s receptivity to complex themes. With this audacious step forward, Kristen Stewart not only redefines her career, but also challenges audiences to confront deep and, at times, disturbing narratives.
