The Fifty Shades of Gray and Madame Web actress explained her speech and experience with Luca Guadagnino’s film.

Suspiria, from 1977, is indeed one of the most legendary horror gems of Dario Argento’s career. And it turns out that Italian director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name and Rivals) knew this and decided to launch his own version in 2018 with a strong cast made up of names like Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson and Mia Goth.

However, filming the film caused some problems for lead actress Dakota Johnson, who confessed during a conversation with Elle magazine that the production “spoiled” her so much that she needed therapy.

This was a line that haunted her for a long time, until, when promoting the film at the Venice Film Festival, still in 2018, Johnson wanted to explain these statements. Although she stated that she has never been “psychoanalyzed” – and does not expect that to happen in the future – the actress explained the following:

Sometimes when I work on a project (…) I absorb a lot of people’s feelings. When you work with a dark theme, it stays with you; and talking to someone nice is a good way to disconnect from the project. My therapist is a very nice woman.

Far from the actress’ experience being traumatic, she described filming the film with adjectives such as “fun”, “exciting” or even “playful”. “It wasn’t the movie that sent me to the hospital, I just have a lot of feelings,” Johnson said.

Tilda Swinton, aware of her co-star’s feelings, decided to take the opportunity at the event to issue a warning to the public: “I encourage all of you who felt distressed by the film to find a good therapist.” At the 2018 Venice Film Festival, Luca Guadagnino was nominated for the Golden Lion, the ceremony’s biggest award, and for the Queer Lion, a category dedicated to works that deal with LGBTQIAP+ themes and queer culture.

What is the story of Suspiria: The Dance of Fear?

In Suspiria, Dakota plays the role of Susie Bannion, a young American dancer who wins the opportunity to join the prestigious Markos Tanz Company in Berlin. She arrives just as Patricia (Chloë Grace Moretz) mysteriously disappears.

Having made extraordinary progress over time, with the guidance of Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton), Susie ends up making friends with another dancer, Sara (Mia Goth), who shares with her all her dark and threatening suspicions that seem to surround the place where she lives. Before it was a dream.

Suspiria: The Dance of Fear is available on Amazon Prime Video.
