An American couple who bought a ‘one euro house’ in Italy opened up and told the real story. Gary and Tam Holm were attracted by the offer that went viral on social media in 2019.

In an interview with Business Insider, the couple said that they found out about houses being sold for just one euro online in 2019. Interested, they sent an email to the contact person who offered and were responded to by the mayor, at the time, of Sambuca di Sicilia , an Italian commune in the Sicily region.

The offer was confirmed by the mayor but it didn’t go down well when they arrived at the place to visit…

The truth, according to the couple, is that the auctions started with offers of one euro but rose according to interest. They offered 5 thousand euros, around R$27 thousand, but they didn’t get it.

Even after refusing, the couple didn’t give up because they were enchanted by the city. So they decided to invest in a property. Actually, two.

Gary and Tam Holm bought a house for €19,000, which is worth around R$103,000. They thought they would only need a few repairs but were attracted by the house next door and decided to expand the land.

Finally, with the addition of another house and the increase in floor plan, they spent another 8 thousand euros. In total, Gary and Tam have already spent around 160 thousand euros, around R$870 thousand.

The works have not yet been completed and the couple continues to share their work on social media.
