James experienced difficult days in the first years of his life and went through two traumas: his father’s abandonment and his mother, Cynthia’s illness. A follower of Christian Science, Cynthia died of cancer, a disease that she did not want to treat because of her religion. James was a teenager when his mother passed away.

“Dad left and for months and months we had no idea he wasn’t coming back. My mother said he was on a business trip and finally told the truth. I felt the fear of being the man of the house too, and not knowing what To do, I felt like I didn’t learn enough from my father, that he wasn’t there for me. All of that was piling up. I felt a lot of hatred for him. He didn’t even say goodbye.

My mother passed away about three years after that. I attribute this a lot to discomfort with divorce and turmoil. It was very traumatic (…). She wasn’t interested in finding out what it was. We watched my mother waste away. My sister and I looked at each other and couldn’t say anything. My brothers were old enough to understand this and they finally said, ‘Something is very wrong. Let’s get her help.’ But it was too late. She died of cancer,” James reported during an interview with Guitar World.

As one could imagine, James was marked by the events mentioned above. All the bad feelings caused by his father’s abandonment and his mother’s early death ended up becoming one of Metallica’s most furious songs: “Dyers Eve”.

The track that ends “…And Justice For All”, “Dyers Eve” was described by Hetfield as “pure contempt”, in an interview he gave to the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone magazine.

“‘Dyers Eve’ portrays a child who was sheltered from most of the outside world, like I was with this religion that my parents were involved in, Christian Science. It alienated me from a lot of kids at school,” James stated.

According to an article published on the Songfacts website, James said that there is a lot of blame in music. “This song was about being in a cocoon, and now that I’m alone, oh, my God, the world is shocking me. I don’t know how to deal with these things. I don’t know how to deal with grief, poverty, confrontation. How to live alone, after his father left and his mother died.”

Although released in 1988, “Dyers Eve” was first performed live in March 2004. The song has not appeared in a concert by the group since November 2010.
