The Metal Musikast channel on YouTube has started a new series of videos with a complete analysis of Bruce Dickinson’s newest solo album, “The Mandrake Project”. The series will have a total of 10 videos with detailed reviews. There is a lot of information and curiosities about each of the songs and lyrics of the Iron Maiden singer’s new studio work.
The second video features an analysis of the lyrics of “Rain on the Graves”, which was the second single from the album and was accompanied by a video at the time of its release.

Bruce Dickinson stated that the inspiration for the lyrics came from a visit he made to Grasmere Cemetery, in the Lake District, when he attended a wedding and took the opportunity to see the grave of the poet William Wordsworth. The day was rainy and Bruce started to create the idea of a pact with the devil, remembering the legend of Robert Johnson, a blues icon who was always accused of having made such a pact.

Iron Maiden’s lead singer usually starts from a certain idea and develops lyrics that contain different expressions of his personal conviction. He has already stated that he always tries to tell a good story, but without neglecting to put many of his opinions in the lyrics.

Bruce Dickinson is a declared fan of British occultist Alster Crowley who, in turn, believed he was the reincarnation of the greatest occultist of the century. XIX: Eliphas Lévi. This was the one who compiled the symbols that make up the figure known as Baphomet. The image of such a spiritual figure was inspired by images of deities of ancient peoples. One of them was Baal, who the Babylonians believed to be the god of fertility, including the fertility of the earth, which is why those people made sacrifices to obtain the rain that irrigated the lands and gave prosperity.
It is quite possible that Dickinson refers to rain in the lyrics exactly as a hidden reference to the figure mentioned above, who was venerated by Crowley, the singer’s idol.

And the reference to the rain that falls on the graves (“graves”) comes from the idea of black magic used by the English occultist, since those who practice it believe that they perform enchantments to access the energies or consciousnesses of the dead. Thus, “Rain on the Graves” hides the cross-references of Baal and necromancy, themes very dear to Bruce Dickinson’s religious idol.
It’s no surprise that the character in the lyrics is in the cemetery on a rainy day to make a pact with the devil. It is not an apparition that the character is terrified of, as in the lyrics of the song Black Sabbath, for example.
