In conversation with The Cut magazine, singer Normani stated that the single “Motivation”, responsible for her solo debut, did not represent her and that the debut, despite being successful, was only due to pressure from the record company.

“I didn’t feel like it represented me and I already knew how it worked. But the record company said ‘Sorry, let’s release it’.” Normani also spoke about the exhaustive recording of the music video, ironizing the fact that it went through more than 50 edits. “And it needed to be ‘fucking black’.” When contacted, RCA, responsible for the artist at the time, declined to comment on the statements.

His first album, “Dopamine”, received its name, according to the publication, due to the fact that the last few years have been a rollercoaster of emotions. The first song, “1:59”, is now available and features rapper Gunna.

Normani has been promising a solo album since 2018, the same year that the girl band she formed with Camila Cabello, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke and Dinah Jane split. The years, however, passed without many signs of such a project.

The artist released only two singles in the meantime: in addition to “Motivation”, already mentioned, “Fair”, a solo project that anticipated partnerships such as “Love Lies”, with Khalid; “Dancing with a Stranger”, with Sam Smith; and “Wild Side” with Cardi B.

The album “Dopamine”, the first in Normani’s career, is scheduled to be released on June 14th.
