The Israel Defense Forces bombed the Iranian embassy building in Damascus, the Syrian capital, this Monday, causing several fatalities. According to Reuters, an Islamic Revolution Guards commander was killed in the attack.

Syrian and Iranian media confirmed this afternoon that the Iranian embassy, in the Mazzeh neighborhood, had been attacked, reporting at least five deaths. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), based in the United Kingdom, records eight fatalities.

In reaction, a spokesperson for the Israeli Army simply said “not to comment on news from the foreign press”.

The head of Syrian diplomacy, Fayssal Mikdad, was at the scene and guaranteed that “the Zionist Israeli occupation regime will not be able to affect relations between Iran and Syria”.

On the Iranian side, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated, in a telephone call with Fayssal Mikdad, that Iran holds Israel responsible for the attack on Damascus, considering it “a violation of all international conventions”. He also called on the international community to sanction the Israeli Government for the most recent “criminal acts”.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel, on October 7 last year, the Defense Forces have intensified offensives against targets of the Revolutionary Guards (from Iran) and Hezbollah (pro-Iranian) in Syria, both supporters of the regime. of Bashar al-Assad, along with continuous retaliations in Palestinian territory.

In 2024 alone, the OSDH has documented 29 Israeli attacks in Syria, which killed ten civilians and 115 fighters, including 13 Iranian members of the Revolutionary Guards and 19 members of the Lebanese Hezbollah.
