Coach Rúben Amorim led to the greatest wave of euphoria today in the Marquês de Pombal square, in Lisbon, when he hinted that he would remain at Sporting to try to make the club two-time champions of the I Football League.
“They said we would only win championships every 18 years, that we only won the championship because we didn’t have an audience and they say we will never be two-time champions again. Let’s see”, he stated, during his speech, causing an ‘explosion’ of joy to the thousands of fans who celebrated as if a goal had been scored.

The celebrations celebrating the 20th Portuguese title in ‘green and white’ history were marked by requests from several club figures, who joined Sporting members and fans in their desire for the coach’s continuity, including captain Coates.
“We are incredible. Thank you for your support this year, which has been unbelievable. Sing it so it stays [Rúben] Amorim”, asked the Uruguayan central defender, before giving him the microphone.

Rúben Amorim also joked about the plane trip he took to London, before the ‘classic’ with FC Porto, around two weeks ago, which created noise about his departure.
“Let’s get this over with, I have a plane to catch early tomorrow. It’s too early for this joke. I’ll save it for later”, Rúben Amorim began his speech, amid laughter, especially from the fans who waited hours for this moment.

Rúben Amorim and Coates also took the opportunity to thank all the members who work at the club, “who don’t have time off, earn much less and who are part of the success”, before giving way to a long fireworks display.
After the bus arrived at Marquês de Pombal, around 01:40, the speaker first called the staff and technical team, followed by the parade, one by one, of the footballers who make up the main squad, leaving Coates and Amorim for last.

Among the most applauded are Swedish ‘goal scorer’ Gyökeres, strike partner Paulinho, to the sound of the adaptation of the original ‘Freed From Desire’, which drove the Marquês crazy, and Pedro Gonçalves, much of the time on stage in bare trunk.
President Frederico Varandas was also one of the happiest on stage, alongside sports director Hugo Viana, while Spaniards Adán and Fresneda ventured to climb several meters to the top of the structure where the DJ was located.

Among the crowd in the audience, everything seemed to go on normally, with no record of disrespect, although dozens of people needed medical assistance on site, due to the intense ‘human heat’ that was felt in the radiant ‘Leonine’ fans.

On Sunday, Sporting became Portuguese football champions for the 20th time, benefiting from Benfica’s 2-0 defeat to Famalicão in the 32nd round of the I League, to reach the title.

With this result, Sporting, who on Saturday beat Portimonense at home (3-0), will once again win the title, after the last one in 2020/21, adding 84 points, eight more than Benfica, when they are only two rounds to be played.
