André Ventura, president of Chega, announced this Tuesday that the party is moving forward with a lawsuit against the President of the Republic. “In the name of the country and its history, we move forward with this unprecedented process”, highlighted the party leader.
The Chega parliamentary group met this Tuesday and, through the party leader, André Ventura, announced that the party is moving forward with a lawsuit against the President of the Republic for statements in which he suggests “reparations” from Portugal to the former colonies.
“There is no parallel in our history of a President of the Republic who decided to open a case against his own country asking for the self-responsibility of its citizens, its ancestors, its soldiers”, highlighted André Ventura.
What was decided this Tuesday, according to the party leader, is whether Marcelo’s words “deserve constitutional and political censure”. “In conscience, this party could not fail to highlight the gravity of words that touch our history. In the name of the country, we decided to move forward with an unprecedented process in our parliamentary history,” he said.
Ahead of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, the President of the Republic suggested, at a dinner with foreign journalists, that Portugal assume responsibility for crimes committed during the colonial era, proposing the payment of reparations for past mistakes.
Last week, the President of the Republic argued that Portugal must lead the process of assuming and repairing the consequences of the period of colonialism and suggested as an example debt forgiveness, cooperation and financing, which have already been established.
