John Herdman wanted to go to Beirut but ended up being detained in Malaga

John Herdman was 17 when he had to appear before a judge in Spain over a prank gone wrong. This story about Canada coach John Herdman, 47, is being told this Wednesday by the English press. Herdman was still a teenager when in 1993 he took a plane from Newcastle to Malaga. Shortly after taking off, the young man decided to create panic on board by informing the pilot that he was in possession of a bomb, demanding that the device be diverted to Beirut. The pilot contacted Britannia Airways, the company managing the flight, and asked for advice on what to do, but was told to continue to Spain. When the plane landed, young Herdman was arrested by the Malaga police and the plane was searched, finding no bombs or weapons.

Herdman was only released after convincing the court that it was all a joke that went wrong and that he just wanted to “break the ice” with the pilot…
