In the publication, Porto officials denounce that “the mayor of Cartaya, who continues to defame Sérgio Conceição, has a past marked by accusations of violence, corruption and lack of transparency”, before making it happen.

“In 2018, he insulted and attacked a Popular Party member outside a casino. Two years later, Manuel Barroso’s involvement in a bribery case became public and, in June 2020, the Spanish press reported that the mayor had not complied the obligation to publicly disclose the income earned”, they detailed.

Through the station “Antena Huelva Radio”, Manuel Barroso, the mayor of Cartaya, gave his version of the case: “They told me that some people had just entered the pitch to attack the referee. I ran to support him, the man was about to enter the tunnel. Before entering, one of them slapped him in the face.”

“With a grotesque attitude, they told me: “you don’t know who you’re talking to.” (…) Later I found out that he was the coach of the FC Porto main team. I told him: “You’re not ashamed, being a leader of this club, you disrespected me and even attacked me”, but then he continued to disrespect me and even threatened to kill me”.

Sérgio Conceição also reacted to the case, guaranteeing that the accusations against him are “false and lies”. “My lawyers are in Spain to do what they have to do. If it is necessary for me to take a break from football, to leave football, to prove what I am saying, I will leave. My honor, what I am like man, as a father is much more important”, he added.
