After some speculation, Liberty Media Corporation has finally reached an agreement to obtain the rights to Moto GP. The company responsible for Formula 1 confirmed this Monday that it acquired 86% of Dorna, organizer of the Moto GP, for a value of 3.5 million euros.

“We are very excited to expand our portfolio in the world of sport and entertainment with the acquisition of MotoGP. It is a global championship, with a loyal and enthusiastic phalanx of fans, with fascinating fights and a high financial turnover capacity. Carmelo and his team have created a great sporting spectacle that we can expand to a global audience. We intend to continue to grow the sport for MotoGP fans, teams, commercial partners and shareholders,” explained Greg Maffei, CEO and President of Liberty Media.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna, was enthusiastic about the move. “This is the perfect step in the evolution of MotoGP and we are excited to see what it will bring to Dorna, MotoGP and its fans. We are proud to see our global growth and this transaction is testament to the value the sport has and the its growth potential. We couldn’t have chosen a better partner to evolve the MotoGP fan base”, he said.

Dorna remains independent, continuing with its headquarters in Madrid and Carmelo Ezpeleta as CEO.
