A The next round could be a party at the Alvalade Stadium. Sporting is looking for its 20th national championship title in the 32nd round of the I League. To do so, it is necessary to win against the ‘afflicted’ Portimonense, on Saturday, and still wait for a slip-up from eternal rival Benfica at Famalicão’s home, the following day.

But let’s focus on what the lions can do, as they will not intervene in the game that will take place in Minho. In Alvalade, Sporting welcomes a ‘client’ of whom they have fond memories. The Portimão club has never won on a visit to the Lions emblem in recent years.

There are now 20 duels that took place between Sporting and Portimonense at the Alvalade Stadium and the result, with more or less overwhelming numbers, was always the same: Leonine victory. And if we look at the duels in Portimão, the trend is similar.

Auri-Negros haven’t beaten Sporting… since 2018

Urgently needing points to avoid relegation, the team led by Paulo Sérgio knows that their history of clashes with Sporting is not favorable, not even when they play at home.

Counting the matches played in the Algarve, the Auri-Negros last beat the Lions in the 2018/19 season. In the seventh round of the I League at the time, Portimonense won 4-2. Since then, there have been 11 consecutive victories for Sporting in the Algarve.

Perfect record in the championship, almost perfect in the season

At a time when Sporting is, potentially, five points away from achieving the desired title of national champion, the lions aim to maintain two records that have marked the sporting season of the team led by Rúben Amorim.

With Sunday’s draw against FC Porto, achieved at the last minute with a double from Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting maintained its record of being the only team to score in every game of the championship. In fact, Rúben Amorim’s team only drew a blank in a single match of the season, in the semi-finals of the League Cup and against Sporting de Braga.

Furthermore, the home triumph over Vitória SC in the last round of the I Liga confirmed that Alvalade is truly a ‘fortress’ for Sporting this season, as the green and whites have a 100% winning record at home, in the championship, adding up to triumphs the 15 games played so far.

All things considered, the green and whites will certainly not want to waste the opportunity to celebrate their 22nd home victory against Portimonense. And if this victory is combined with a slip-up by Benfica in Famalicão, it will be time to order the championship banners for the team led by Rúben Amorim.
