In a statement, signed by the president, as well as the councilors in office, the municipality recalls the 118 years of the ‘green and white’ emblem and highlights the fact that the emblem is “a source of inspiration for millions of people and a bulwark of the highest values of sport, merit and citizenship”.

“But even for those who are not part of the sporting family, looking at Sporting Clube de Portugal, in this more than century-old history, is looking at an example of service, through sport, to the country and, in particular, to the city of Lisbon “, the note reads.

The City Executive notes that Sporting “is one of the most important institutions” in the capital and that, therefore, it is “fair” that the Chamber “joins – recognizing and congratulating – this moment of glory for Sporting Clube de Portugal”.

Sporting became national champions last Sunday, May 5th, after Benfica was defeated 2-0 at Famalicão. And, that night, thousands of fans went to Marquês de Pombal, in the heart of Lisbon, in behavior that also deserves note from the local authority.

“Salute all members and fans of Sporting Clube de Portugal, who supported and celebrated their club’s victory, with civic behavior worthy of positive note”, concludes the statement.

With 84 points so far, the ‘Lions can still beat the record for points achieved by the club in a season. With two duels to play and six points at stake, Rúben Amorim’s men can beat Jorge Jesus’ mark, which dates back to 2015/2016: 86 points.

Sporting can add another trophy to their trophy this season if they beat FC Porto in the Portuguese Cup final, scheduled for May 26th.
