FC Porto: new management still has the Pepe dossier to resolve

Captain ends contract in June and continuity is still unknown; agreed a renewal with Pinto da Costa, but it remains to be implemented; conversation with Villas-Boas to discuss future

Pepe’s continuity at FC Porto is one of the issues to be resolved by the new FC Porto administration, which takes office on May 28th, two days after the final at Jamor, against Sporting.

The Porto captain ends his contract at the end of the season, and despite having agreed a renewal with the Dragons for another year, according to Pinto da Costa, the validation of the link with the League has not yet been carried out, and was dependent on the victory of the now former -president of the club in the April 27 elections.

«I have a contract signed with Pepe to renew for one year. He asked me to only put the contract in the League after the elections, but it was signed. At 41 years old, he still plays like he does, he’s a member of the national team… What do I care if there’s someone who’s 21 but doesn’t play? The contract is signed, if I continue as president he will continue to play. If I don’t continue, he will have to talk to whoever comes”, said Pinto da Costa, on the 23rd, during a ceremony at the Casino de Espinho.

With the results of the elections known, which dictated a landslide victory for Villas-Boas, it remains to be seen whether the 41-year-old central defender intends to continue wearing blue and white.

After agreeing to extend his contract for another season, it is clear that it will not be for physical reasons that Pepe will stop playing for FC Porto.

Despite having had some problems with injuries, which have ruled him out of eight matches so far in 2023/24, the Portuguese international continues to be one of the undisputed players for Sérgio Conceição, whose stay is yet to be determined.
