Microsoft is helping Google develop a new text rendering method that, in a practical way, should help make the browser readable. Chrome more comfortable in the eyes of the Internet user.

The new feature requires a little technical knowledge to explain, but it already exists, technically speaking: dubbed “ClearType Text Tuner”, it has already been distributed on Windows systems (which includes Edge, Microsoft’s browser) for around three years. Now, Chrome should receive an adaptation of it.

A ClearType Text Tuner It’s essentially a function that forces Edge to display certain types of fonts with improved contrast and gamma. The result of this is maintaining the health of the user’s eyes by requiring less of their vision to understand the sources represented on the screen. “ClearType”, in fact, derives from a typography with the same name.

The problem: Google’s Chrome uses a method called “Skia”, a format whose rendering is programmed into the browser’s source code and, consequently, is almost impossible to edit or change. As a result, text in Chrome appears thinner and more transparent than in Edge, which can strain your vision to understand it.

This is especially bad when speech switches to languages other than Latin – such as Russia’s Cyrillic alphabet or Japanese, Chinese and Korean characters.

What Microsoft wants is to create a function that “teach” Chrome to “choose” where and when to apply the ClearType Text Tuner parameters in the Skia format. Thus, the Google browser does not need to have its code rewritten, but it is also not forced to give up the benefits of a different system.

It’s worth mentioning: both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome use the Chromium engine in their development, so collaborations of this type are very common and beneficial.

The new feature must be implemented in version 124 of the Chromewhich entered beta on the 20th, but there is still no date for a definitive launch.
