Apple’s new smartphone line may feature a unique design with capacitive buttons.

The claim that the iPhone 16 will have capacitive buttons comes from Economic Daily News — and this could result in a device subtly different from all previous models.

Instead of power and volume buttons that move in and out when you tap them, as is done now, the supposed new buttons detect pressure and respond with haptic feedback. This feedback makes the button appear to be moving when in fact it is not.

Apple has experience in this: Touch ID, present in older iPhones, was activated in this way. The result is a phone with fewer moving parts. But Apple has never done this with a wake button before.

The report also claims that the capacitive elements will be on both sides of the phone, with volume switches and ‘action’ button on one side and the phone’s on and off button on the other.

The report is emphatic in stating that the change will “cancel physical buttons and replace them with capacitive buttons”, and that this will lead Apple to “the goal of making the physical button disappear from the external body of the iPhone”.

The text also claims that the new buttons will be launched in the third quarter, which casts doubt on availability for the iPhone 16 — as the date seems absurdly late for Apple’s needs, given that the new iPhone will be presented in September.

If this part of the rumor is accurate, it seems more likely that the buds are being prepared for the iPhone 17, not the iPhone 16
