A recent survey carried out in the United States revealed the navigation application preferred by drivers to avoid speed cameras. Conducting the investigation, MarketWatch, in collaboration with Speedtrap.org, surveyed more than 1,000 American drivers, with equal male and female representation and an average age of 41.

The results were surprising as they indicated that an overwhelming majority, corresponding to 70% of respondents, demonstrated a clear preference for Google Maps when it comes to avoiding speed cameras. In second place is Waze, also owned by Google, with a 27% adoption among the drivers surveyed, followed closely by Apple Maps, which won 25% of the participants’ preference.

It is notable that more than a third of respondents admitted having already been alerted to the presence of speed cameras through a navigation application. Although Google Maps leads in popularity, Waze was considered the most effective in this task, surpassing Google Maps by 30% and Apple Maps by 20%, as Pplware tells us.

Another interesting point highlighted by the survey is the tendency of users of different applications to exceed speed limits. The research revealed that 23% of Google Maps users admitted exceeding the limits, followed by Waze users with 11%, and Apple Maps, with 9% of its users reporting the same behavior.

For MarketWatch, the definition of a speed camera encompasses an area where the speed limit is lower than the “safest average speed of travel on a road.” These areas are subject to police monitoring, with the aim of strictly enforcing speed limits for inspection purposes and, consequently, obtaining revenue.

The results of this survey highlight not only drivers’ preferences in terms of navigation applications, but also the significant influence they have on their behavior while driving, especially with regard to compliance with speed limits.
