Intel recently revealed that all computers focused on artificial intelligence (AI) that run Windows will have a dedicated Copilot key. In addition to having dedicated components for local processing of AI-powered tools, Microsoft requires the device to have a physical shortcut to trigger the assistant.

Microsoft thinks of the AI PC as the perfect combination of hardware and software. The computer must have a recent processor with NPUs (Neural Processing Unit) and have Copilot installed by default (available on Windows 11).

However, for Intel, an AI PC is a device that is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra processor embedded with “artificial intelligence experiences” that boost productivity and security.

“From Intel’s perspective, our AI PC has an Intel Core Ultra and an integrated NPU because it’s unlocking all kinds of new features and functions in the AI space,” explained PC ecosystem lead at Intel, Todd Lewellen . “We have a great alignment with Microsoft, but there will be some systems out there that may not have the physical key [do Copilot]but they have our NPU integrated”, he continued.

In any case, it is likely that computer manufacturers will embrace Microsoft’s standard over time — and perhaps the majority of 2024 releases will already include the “Copilot” button on the keyboard.

What are the advantages of a PC with AI?

For now, Microsoft did not disclose what advantages a computer would have for meeting all its criteria of a “PC with AI”. However, it is possible that this category of machines has access to specific Windows functions.

However, the presence of a processor with a powerful NPU opens the door to the development of even more efficient AI tools. Developers can leverage the component’s presence to create programs and features powered by templates optimized for local processing, without relying on servers.

AI in Windows 11

It is worth mentioning that AI will be one of the main highlights of the next major Windows 11 update, 24H2. Copilot should have an even more notable presence within the operating system and several of the native programs should gain new features powered by models.

Several of the details of this package of new features have already been anticipated based on signs found in test versions of Windows 11. Microsoft Edge should incorporate even more Copilot features, as well as the File Explorer.

So far, the Windows 11 24H2 release date has not been released, but the update should be released between September and October this yearif Microsoft follows the tradition of annual updates.
