Microsoft and OpenAI will be working together on an ambitious project, with an estimated value of 100 billion dollars, which involves the development of a supercomputer. The new equipment will power the next generation of artificial intelligence systems from the creator of ChatGPT.

According to The Information, the supercomputer, called Stargate, could go into operation in 2028, forming part of the fifth phase of the project that the technology companies intend to implement in the United States.

Apparently, Microsoft and OpenAI will already be in the third phase of the project. The fourth stage will involve the launch of another supercomputer, with capabilities less advanced than those of Stargate, in 2026.

Stargate could be one of the largest and most advanced supercomputers in the world and is expected to play a key role in the development of OpenAI’s next GPT models.

Its development will, however, depend on the ability of the company led by Sam Altman to launch GPT-5, something that could happen as early as 2025.

Another “weight” factor is the acquisition of AI chips that are capable of responding to the project’s needs. Microsoft and OpenAI’s plans foresee the use of chips from different suppliers.

Remember that, back in November last year, Microsoft announced that it was developing its own AI chips, which will be used to train large-scale language models (LLM) and to power centers of Azure data.

The companies have not yet publicly confirmed their plans, but, speaking to Reuters, a Microsoft spokesperson highlighted that the technology company is permanently working on infrastructure innovation that allows it to continue expanding AI capabilities.
