After having previously been assured by the CEO of Discord that users would never have ads on the platform, here is the turnaround.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Discord is preparing to introduce ads on the platform for all users. These ads will appear in the bottom left part of the chat program online and will serve to try to increase the platform’s revenue.
Discord has always been free and in recent years it has tried to rely on a subscription service, Nitro, to survive, but the profits are not enough to withstand the growing challenges. In January this year, the platform released around 17% of its entire workforce as it is facing a complicated phase of lack of revenue and unstable growth.
The brand will also have gone to the market to reinforce its advertising division, in order to create a profitable system that will allow the program to remain free in the future.
So far Discord has not commented on this report, which goes against the opinion of its CEO, Jason Citron, but is expected to reveal the entire plan soon. According to the WSJ, it will be possible to turn off ads on the platform free of charge and voluntarily.
