Windows 10 cumulative updates will be smaller thanks to a new feature that is already present in Windows 11. The function allows packages take up about 40% less space on your computer’s internal storage.

The reduction in the size of compilations is thanks to a solution presented by Microsoft in October 2021. In the original article, the company explains how it managed to apply a series of methods, including mathematical expressions, to develop the mechanism.

In general, the company replaced the traditional method of forwarding entire files in the update, targeting the modified parts exclusively. The result of these optimizations and code improvements generate savings of around 40% of the package size.

Due to the new feature, the April 2024 security patch took up around 650 MB and the next Windows 10 security patch (for May) will weigh less than 700 MB on internal storage.

The build size optimization is rolled out publicly within the KB5036979 patch on Windows 10. As always, the package is delivered via Windows Update.
