Android 15 can force dark mode on all apps!

Although Android 15 is still in its initial beta version, many new features have already been detected that may be made available in the stable version. Recently, some code sequences suggested that Android 15 could bring a function that automatically turns off the smartphone’s screen when not in use. Now there is another new feature in Android 15 that can force dark mode on all smartphone applications. This is even though they don’t support dark mode natively.

Android 15 can force dark mode on all apps!

Dark mode is a very popular function nowadays. Since it offers a more comfortable viewing experience, most people switch to dark mode as soon as they get a new smartphone. Dark mode also helps conserve battery life.

Unfortunately, not all applications support dark mode. The solution to this problem was a setting called ‘override force-dark’ found in Developer Options. This functionality had a limitation. Although I could apply dark mode to the application, the result was not pleasant. So many times, it could make the text in the application unreadable.

As spotted by Mishaal, the hidden “make all apps dark” option in Settings > Accessibility > Color & Motion works better than the developer options that have existed since Android 10.

Upon enabling the option, Mishaal found that the “Make all apps dark” option works very well and does not change the text or images. However, everything gets better thanks to changes in the underlying algorithm. Furthermore, since the feature is found under Accessibility in the Settings menu, it is not hidden from users.

As you can see in the screenshot, although the “Make all apps dark” feature could be improved, as it continues to reduce the contrast of certain buttons, the result is much better than the “Force dimming” option.

The function is not yet available in the Android 15 beta update. However, it is speculated that it will arrive with the next beta update, which is scheduled to arrive during Google I/O 2024 next month.
