Ubuntu MATE is a desktop Linux distribution that aims to bring the simplicity and elegance of the Ubuntu operating system through a classic and traditional desktop environment – the MATE desktop.
MATE is the continuation of the GNOME 2 desktop environment, which was used as the default Ubuntu desktop until 10.10 (when it was replaced by Unity).
The project began its life as a “remix” of Ubuntu, but as of version 15.04, it has been formally accepted as an official member of the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions.
Now, the Ubuntu MATE team has released version 24.04 LTS of their distribution.

Ubuntu MATE 24.04 brings some fixes and brings it more in line with Ubuntu. It ships MATE Desktop 1.26.2 stable with a selection of bug fixes and minor improvements to associated components.
Ubuntu MATE 24.04 has integrated the new Ubuntu Desktop Bootstrap installer. Additionally, GNOME Firmware (which replaces Firmware Updater) has been added and App Center has been added, which replaces Software Boutique.
What’s more, Ubuntu MATE Welcome has been retired, although it is still available for Ubuntu MATE 23.10 and earlier.
Accompanying MATE Desktop 1.26.2, the system features kernel 6.8, Firefox 125, Celluloid 0.26, Evolution 3.52, and LibreOffice 24.2.2.
