ChatGPT is getting smarter by releasing the “memory” feature to more ChatGPT Plus subscribers globally. OpenAI had announced the feature in February, but it was available to few users. This time, the functionality will be released to all paying users, as long as they are not from Europe or Korea.
OpenAI did not say why these regions were left out of receiving the new feature, but it is assumed that it is due to local laws related to the processing of citizen data.
“Memory” will make AI smarter
ChatGPT’s memory feature allows the artificial intelligence (AI) tool to remember information and settings for each user to offer more complete and natural assistance. Among the information that AI will be able to store are queries, commands and specific personal information.

In the image above, there are examples of personal information that ChatGPT may use for later use in the same account: name, age and gender of children, preferences and tastes of children, travel preferences and approaches to personal assistance, among others.
Before the memory feature, ChatGPT only recorded this information in active conversations. When starting a new conversation, everything was lost.
The memory feature is based on machine learning. ChatGPT will be able to provide more personalized responses based on the information users decide the tool can store, and also using its algorithm to learn about users’ preferences as they use the tool.
ChatGPT’s memory will be customizable, meaning users will be able to define what information the AI should store for later use. In this way, OpenAI protects itself from criticism regarding the previous tests carried out with the new functionality. Users will even be able to make the AI “forget” unwanted details.
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT memory feature will be launched for ChatGPT Enterprise and Teams subscribers, as well as custom GPTs in the GPT Store, however, without mentioning a specific date.
