Nintendo released, in the early hours of this Tuesday (5), its financial results for the 2024 fiscal year, which ended on March 31. The numbers followed the first public confirmation that the company is already working on a successor to the Nintendo Switch and that its formal announcement will take place during this new period, which runs until March of next year.

In a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter), Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, also confirmed that the company will hold a live broadcast in June this year focusing on games from the Nintendo Switch catalog that arrive until the end of 2024. He made a point of clarifying that there will be no news about the successor to the hybrid console in this presentation.

“We will be announcing the successor to the Nintendo Switch this fiscal year. It will be over nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in May 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct in June to talk about the Nintendo Switch gaming calendar for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during this presentation”says the president.

It’s worth remembering that the Nintendo Switch calendar currently includes titles like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HDscheduled for May and June, respectively; Pokémon Legends: ZA, which should arrive in 2025; It is Metroid Prime 4which has not received official information since 2019 and remains without a forecast.

What is known about the Switch 2?

First of all, it is important to make it clear that the “Switch 2”, as it is casually called, does not yet have an official name. In the same way, all information that has emerged about the hardware is nothing more than speculation at this time – although many come from reliable industry sources.

To begin with, Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, known as PH, declared in February this year that, according to his sources, Nintendo’s new hardware will be fully backwards compatible with Switch games – both in cartridge and digital media, with room for updates with graphical improvements. The information was given exclusively on your podcast, Control X.

Furthermore, the video game must maintain the premise of Joy-Cons controls that we already know today, but this time betting on a fitting with magnetic suction technology – controlled by electric current. The revised version would also be larger, with new buttons on the sides, metallic SL and SR buttons and a new button below the Home button. The information, initially published by the French website Vandal, was corroborated by a peripheral company called Mobapad.

The site also points out that the laptop’s screen will be upgraded to eight inches, with native support for 1080p resolution. The console’s base, called the dock, will also use a USB-C connection, supporting 4K resolution, and shouldn’t change drastically in appearance. With this, it is safe to speculate that the hybrid video game concept should be maintained.

Regarding technical specifications, it is still too early to draw conclusions. However, there are rumors that the video game will use a custom chipset from Nvidia, called T239. It would include eight ARM A78C cores and a GPU based on the Ampere architecture, which would support up to 1536 CUDA cores.

It is interesting to note that the chipset would also support technologies such as DLSS, which aims to render graphics with higher quality and performance while consuming less hardware resources. It is worth reinforcing that This is all speculation and Nintendo has not yet formally announced the specifications of its new video game.

Sales success

The release of financial results also means that sales figures have been updated. Although the Nintendo Switch is on a downward trend year after year, the console reached the mark of 141 million units sold worldwide. It remains the third best-selling console in history, behind only the Nintendo DS (154 million) and PlayStation 2 (155 million).

The console also generated more than 1 billion and 235 million software sales. Super Mario Bros. Wonderwhich competed for the Game of the Year award, is not yet among the platform’s ten best sellers, but has recorded 13.44 million units sold worldwide.
