French official works in Ligue 1, is a well-known figure in the Champions League and referees his second World Cup

FIFA announced this Saturday (3), the refereeing team for the round of 16 duel between Brazil and South Korea, which will take place on Monday (5), at 4 pm (Brasília time). The man with the whistle will be Frenchman Clement Turpin, a well-known figure in European competition.

In addition to Turpin, who will referee his third game in this edition of the World Cup (he worked in Uruguay 0 x 0 South Korea and Ecuador 1 x 2 Senegal, in the group stage), the assistants will be the French Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore . The fourth official will be the Slovenian Slavko Vincic.

The VAR will be in charge of the French Jerome Brisard, while the Spaniards Alejandro Hernandez and Roberto Diaz take over as VAR assistant and offside video referee, respectively. Frenchman Benoit Millot completes the team in support of VAR.

Clement Turpin is a well-known character from the main competitions in European football. In addition to perhaps being the top referee in Ligue 1, he has worked in matches for the Euro, Nations League, Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup.

Turpin became a professional referee in 2005. Three years later, on 16 August 2008, he made his Ligue 1 debut and in 2010 officially joined the FIFA refereeing board.

The Qatar Cup is the second World Cup to feature Turpin’s work. In 2018, he refereed two group stage matches: Uruguay 1 x 0 Saudi Arabia and Switzerland 2 x 2 Costa Rica.

The French official is considered one of the most experienced in football today. On his resume, he has six refereed finals. The most important of them, without a doubt, was the Champions League decision of the 21/22 season, when Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in Paris.

He has refereed 251 matches in Ligue 1, 35 in the French Cup (including two finals) and 21 in the French League Cup.

At the European level, there were 48 Champions League games, 32 Europa League games, 5 Euro Cup games, 5 Nations League matches, in addition to 8 European Cup qualifiers.

He also arrives with two Olympic games under his belt in which he refereed Nigeria 5 x 4 Japan and South Korea 1 x 0 Mexico, in the 2016 Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro.

In the last edition of the Club World Cup, Turpin was the main referee of Palmeiras’ victory over Al Ahly, by 2-0.

In 2018, during a Ligue 1 match, Brazilian defender Daniel Alves was sent off by Turpin 11 seconds into the second half. After a strong arrival, Alves complained acrimoniously against Turpin, who showed the red card to the PSG defender. On that occasion, the team from the capital would lose the game to Lyon 2-1, and Daniel Alves ended up being suspended for three games.
