The hijacker of the bus that came from Rio de Janeiro to Juiz de Fora, in Zona da Mata, was on the run from justice in Minas. He had been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a homicide in the interior of the state. This Tuesday (12), he took 17 hostages and shot two people, leaving one in serious condition.

In 2015, the suspect confessed to murdering a man with a machete in the city of Goianá, also in Zona da Mata. At the time, he was arrested, but managed to be released, through a habeas corpus, after the trial period ended.

According to the Minas Gerais Court of Justice (TJMG), the trial took place in September 2023 and the man was sentenced under a closed regime. However, the suspect did not attend the hearing and was considered a fugitive.

The kidnapping began around 3pm on Tuesday, when the man invaded the bus on the Novo Rio bus station platform, in the central region of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The man shot two people. One of the injured, a 34-year-old miner, was taken to the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital in serious condition. After three hours of negotiation, the man surrendered to the police.
