Netflix launches, this Thursday (14), the documentary miniseries “The Nest: Football and Tragedy“, which tells the story of the fire at Flamengo’s Training Center (CT). Ten young people of the club’s youth teams lost their lives in the tragedy in 2019.

The person responsible for directing and producing the documentary, Pedro Asbegspoke with the Daily regarding the launch.

“From the first moment this work began, I understood the size of the responsibility I had to tell this story, whether because it involved the death of ten young people, or because it was about the Flamengothe most popular club in Brazil, is, mainly, talking about these boys whose fathers and mothers will carry this pain forever”, explains Asbeg.

They are three episodes that balance the findings of the investigations into what happened and the situation of the families, who found themselves destitute and with incessant pain to bear. For the director, respect and trust were the basis for relationships with these people, also victims.

“These families, in some way, are grateful that this work exists, because one of the things they want most is for this tragedy not to be forgotten. Somehow, [a série] gives visibility to this tragedy and those responsible for it”, he says.

The fire, which started from a short circuit in the electrical installations of the youth dormitory, exposed irregularities and negligence on the part of one of the biggest clubs in Brazil. Investigations showed that Flamengo was aware of the security instability of the place that served as a home for young people who, at the time, slept in accommodation set up in a container.

“We are raising an issue that is very important, mainly because this process is still open, right? The trial never took place“, recalls Asbeg, who emphasizes the lack of punishment to this day. “We are talking about the deaths of ten young people and to this day there has been no punishment, they have not been found responsible”, he states.

During the conversation, the director spoke about the responsibility of dealing with such a sensitive story for an audience that often lacks empathy. In the weeks following the tragedy, fans of rivals and even Flamengo themselves were ironic and even used the fire as a provocation.

Asbeg recalled these situations and stated that production is also for these people. “For those who support Flamengo and argue that these people are wanting to benefit from the death of their children, they are wanting to take money from the club, I hope that by ending it they change their minds a little and say ‘wow, how could I ever think about that? This person lost a son, there’s nothing more painful’. I hope that these people who don’t support Flamengo and used the tragedy to provoke Flamengo fans, they also change their minds a little”, he said.

“In the times we live in, I think there will be a little bit of everything, I want to believe that we will generate epiphanies and changes in the minds of some other people, and at the same time, I think that others will not be changed, They don’t even want to be changed”, says Asbeg.

Proposing to tell an emotional story of the search for truth and justice, the series has the strength to propose debate and investigates the circumstances of a tragedy that killed ten young people and ended countless dreams. “I sincerely hope that whoever watches with an open heart will look at the humans, at the fathers, mothers, uncles, grandfathers, brothers, who will forever deal with this pain. My desire is to humanize and give a face, give a voice to these people”, he concludes.
