Marielle case: 6 years after the murder of the councilor and her driver, 4 suspects are arrested – Noticia Preta

This Thursday (14) the murder of councilor Marielle Franco (Psol) and her driver Anderson Gomes completes six years. With no information yet on the perpetrators and motivations for the attack, investigations continue and so far four suspects have been arrested: Ronnie Lessa, Élcio de Queiroz, Maxwell Simões Corrêa, and Edilson Barbosa.

Ronnie was arrested in March 2019, as was Élcio de Queiroz, who in his statement named Lessa as the author of the shots at Marielle and Anderson, and admitted that he was driving the car that chased the councilwoman’s vehicle. Maxwell Simões Corrêa, known as Suel, He was also indicated in Élcio’s testimony as one of those involved, for having provided the car used for the murder.

The most recently arrested suspect at the end of last month, Edilson Barbosa, was identified by the investigation as the person responsible for dismantling the silver Cobalt used in the crime, in 2018. So far, the first three suspects who have been arrested They are already considered defendants in the murders of Marielle and Anderson, and should be tried by a popular jury.

Ronnie Lessa was expelled from the PM, and in 2021 he was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison, followed by 5 years, with an increased sentence, for destroying evidence. The former police officer hid the weapons that would have been used in the crime. The suspect remains detained at the Mossoró Federal Penitentiary, in Rio Grande do Norte.

Suel, who is a former sergeant in the Fire Department, is also being investigated for helping to hide the weapons after the crime, and helping to dispose of them. Furthermore, in Élcio’s testimony, he states that Suel also participated in an attempt to kill the councilor in 2017.

The investigations into the case underwent some changes over the six years. In the first months after the murder, the Civil Police led the investigation by the Capital Homicide Police Station, in Barra da Tijuca, in the West Zone.

But in February 2023, the then Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, allowed the Federal Police to open an investigation to investigate the murders, in addition to the attempted murder of advisor Fernanda Chaves, who was also in the car with the councilor and the driver, but it survived.

At the public ministrysince 2018, more than one change of responsible prosecutors has been made, until in 2023, a new work team was set up, which continues to investigate the case until now.

Tributes

This Thursday (14), an event in front of the City Council, in Cinelândia, in the center of Rio, was held in honor of Marielle and Anderson. The demonstration on the steps of the Chamber commemorated the six years since the murders, with parliamentarians and friends of the councilor, as well as several movements of mothers and families of victims of police violence in the state of Rio de Janeiro, together with the Marielle Institute.

Furthermore, the March for Marielle and Anderson Festival, organized by the Institute named after the councilor, will be held at the end of the day, also in the city center, to demand justice for the murders.

The Institute expressed its opinion regarding today’s date: “The justice we want goes beyond holding those who executed and ordered this political crime that took the lives of Marielle and Anderson accountable. We seek broad justice, which extends to other cases, and ensures reparation and non-repetition measures, ensuring that no other black woman is interrupted in politics“.
