Manchester United beat Liverpool 4-3 in one of the most dramatic quarter-finals in FA Cup history on Sunday. Here is an analysis of how each player fared.

Manchester United

Continued his impressive form by making a string of saves to deny Liverpool. 8

Another strong showing. He almost felt like a sole defender by the end as United played men forward at will. 7

Bizarrely looked at his best when playing as a left-back in a makeshift back three and bombing forward. 7

Did little wrong before being replaced by match-winner Diallo. 6

Back after two months out through injury and tasked with marking Salah. Discomfort playing out from the back in tight spaces evident for second Liverpool goal. 6

Showed some customary lovely footwork to help orchestrate a chance which McTominay should have buried. 7

Full of running and cunning, he never stopped. United’s squad needs an overhaul but the young Argentine is a diamond in the making. 9

Scored ninth goal of campaign and missed a couple of golden chances but teed up Rashford for third and was indefatigable. 8

Put in a huge shift and was switching between midfield pivot and left-back by the end. A captain’s display. 8

‌Marcus Rashford

Could have let his head drop after a couple of big misses but dragged United level at 3-3 with a fine finish. 8

Tired understandably after a month out through injury but Ten Hag will be relieved to have his main striker back. 6

After a sabbatical for most of the season, Marcus Rashford decided to turn up for work. Gomez had to grow into the game. A mixed bag. 5

The Alan Hansen impersonations are becoming more frequent. Gliding run for Liverpool’s equalizer was a particular highlight. 6

‌Virgil van Dijk

Haaland last week, Hojlund this one. Van Dijk has enjoyed making expensive strikers look terrible. He will have a stern word with his strikers. 7

He has been getting stronger since his return from injury, but he is not quite there yet. However, Liverpool’s defense was not so stable after he was subbed. 6

Struggled early on but class will not be silenced for long. He struck the equalizer and his calmness signaled a shift in momentum until his side self-destructed. 7

Kept finding space in front of United’s defense but not always at his sharpest with passing and shooting. The potential is frightening, though. 6

Pound-for-pound, he is proving one of the most astute signings of the Klopp era. Over-run when United punched early on, but stood his ground. 7

Salah versus United usually means party time for the Egyptian. Nowhere near full fitness and wasteful in the second half, but scored again. 6

Led the Liverpool revival as the first visiting player to turn up. His team-mates followed him off the coach and out of their slumber shortly after. 7

‌Darwin Nunez

Gave Varane a chase in the early stages of the second half. Denied by Onana a couple of times, but a terrible error for Rashford to make it 3-3. 6

Liverpool needed to kill the game earlier. Elliott made an impact in extra-time, but this time the subs weakened the team. 6

Player of the Match

Alejandro Garnacho

In a crowded field, it was difficult to look beyond United’s young Argentine winger. Garnacho blends the exuberance of youth with a fearlessness and refusal to give in and his determination to keep running at Liverpool never gave them a moment’s peace. His decision-making is improving all the time and it was fitting it was the teenager who fed Amad Diallo for that dramatic winner. What a talent he is.

Moment of the match

There were any number of extraordinary moments in an all-time FA Cup classic but it was impossible to look beyond that dramatic finale when Diallo scored the biggest goal of his life – and was then sent off for a second bookable offense after ripping off his shirt in celebration. It was a fittingly crazy end to a crazy game.

Moment you might have missed

As Old Trafford erupted at the final whistle having won the game with almost the last kick of extra time, it was almost easy to forget that Rashford could have won it with the last kick of regulation time. Credit to the England striker that he did not allow that miss to affect him as he plundered an equalizer in extra-time.
