Members of the Parliamentary Public Security Front see an “trump card” to speed up the processing in the Chamber of Deputies of the PEC that criminalizes the possession of any quantity of drugs.

Front deputies are betting all their chips on Bolsonarist deputy Caroline de Toni (PL-SC), who assumed the presidency of the House’s Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) the week before last.

The assessment is that, at the head of the board, the parliamentarian will speed up the processing of the proposal. The expectation is that it will guide the PEC as soon as the matter reaches the CCJ.

According to the Chamber’s internal regulations, the first stage of processing PECs in the House is precisely at the CCJ, which analyzes the constitutionality of the proposed amendment to the Constitution.

Subsequently, the merits of the PEC must be analyzed by a special commission created by the president of the House, from where it goes to the plenary for voting in two rounds.

In the case of the anti-drug PEC, the assessment of opposition deputies heard by the column is that a quick vote on the proposal in the CCJ should give “traction” to the matter.

So far, however, the PEC has not even reached the Chamber. The matter is still being processed in the Senate, where it has already been approved by the House’s CCJ. The expectation is that it will be voted on in the plenary in early April.
