Imagine going back in time every time you listen to a song? This is what happens to the protagonists of Evidence of Love It is Big Hits, two films that premiere in April 2024 and have exactly the same premise. The similarity draws attention not only because of the almost identical proposal of their scripts, but because the two films will arrive in Brazil almost together, creating an unexpected rivalry between them.

The first of them is a national production starring comedian Fábio Porchat and singer Sandy, who play a couple who fall in love when they meet at a karaoke bar. The two share the microphone to sing Evidence — a song that became very famous in the voices of country folk Chitãozinho & Xororó —, they fall in love with each other and begin a relationship that ends because of fights.

It turns out that whenever Marco Antônio (Fábio’s character) listens to that song, he ends up going back in time and reliving an argument between the couple. Focused on changing this situation, he tries to understand the real reason behind the discussions and resolve this impasse once and for all, but of course things are more difficult than they seem.

Directed by Pedro Antônio (I’m Ryca), the film approaches Big Hits by focusing on this time travel, in the best style Butterfly Effect. However, in the film produced in the United States, the protagonist Harriet (Lucy Boynton) goes back to the past when she listens to some specific songs. Since she doesn’t know which ones have the power to teleport her to the past, she needs to test all her vinyl records and playlists on Spotify.

When you manage to go back in time, you can relive the good times you had with your ex-boyfriend (played by David Corenswet from Pearl and the DC Superman) who died in a car accident. But all this nostalgia ends up complicating her life when she meets another boy and finds herself in doubt between giving a new love a chance or being stuck in mourning her ex-lover.

With Austin Crute (They/Them – The Camp), Andie Ju (bullshit), Evan Shafran (Barbie) and Tom Yi (Maid of Honor Mission) in the cast, the film focuses more on drama and romance, having the chance to win over those who like more sugar-coated plots. It made its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin (SXSW), Texas, on March 14 and arrives in Brazil in April on Disney streaming.

Despite having very similar arguments, Evidence of Love It is Big Hits they differ in gender and in some particularities. While the Brazilian is focused on just one song (Evidence), in the foreign version the protagonist is taken back to the past through several songs. Among them are those by Nelly Furtado, Beach House, Roxy Music, Neil Frances, among others.

Furthermore, there is the question of genders. Big Hits is a romantic drama focused on the protagonist’s relationship with the songs that make her revisit her old relationship, placing her at a kind of crossroads between living in the past and moving towards the future. Already at the national Evidence of Lovethe play on the country classic flirts more with the exaggerated humor typical of Porchat, although the script still has some moments of romance within the story.
