The Federal Statistical Office Destatis reported on Friday that the import price index in Germany decreased by 5.9% in January compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. On a monthly basis, import prices remained stable compared to December 2023.

In contrast, export prices recorded a modest decrease of 1.3% year-on-year and a slight increase of 0.1% compared to the previous month, indicating subtle changes in trade dynamics.

The drop in import prices can largely be attributed to a significant decrease in energy costs, with natural gas prices falling 47.2% compared to January 2023. Other energy sources have also seen sharp price reductions , contributing to the global decrease in import prices.

On the other hand, export prices recorded a varied impact across different sectors, with energy, agricultural goods and intermediate goods recording declines, while the prices of capital goods and consumer goods increased compared to the previous year. .
