It was disillusionment that led many Portuguese abroad to give Chega victory, in the emigration vote for the legislative elections. The party elected two deputies, the PS one and the other went to the AD. Researcher José Carlos Marques believes that the feeling of abandonment that many Portuguese abroad feel resulted in votes for Chega. Also a strong campaign on the ground. In any case, the professor at the Center for Sociology Studies at Universidade Nova de Lisboa found Chega’s victory in the emigration votes surprising.

Livre argues that the electoral system must be changed, as it is in emigration circles. About 40 percent of spoiled votes show that something is not working. The Livre party considers that the votes of Portuguese people abroad must be respected. In the same sense, the Associação Somos Portugueses promises to be quick in demanding the new parliament and the new government. He considers it “intolerable” that there were more than 120 thousand invalid votes. It is urgent, considers this Association, to change the law so that it is no longer mandatory to include a photocopy of the citizen card with the voting form, the main reason for so many invalid votes. He will also insist on testing digital voting – he hopes that the measure will move forward with the new parliament. And it is also urgent, according to the Associação Somos Portugueses, that it is urgent to inform Portuguese people abroad of the need to have their address updated in the voter registration, in order to receive the postal vote, in the next elections.
