From today onwards and over the next three weeks, several streets in Leiria will be closed or subject to restricted traffic due to paving works, with the municipality calling on alternative routes to be adopted to avoid constraints.
The matter was taken to last week’s Chamber meeting and explained by the voice of the councilor responsible for Municipal Works, Ricardo Gomes.
“The intervention we are going to carry out is paving the streets in front of the City Hall. This is a street covered by the municipality’s intervention plan, in the requalification of Rua Correia Alves da Silva, one of the main entrances to the city”, explained the councilor.
Ricardo Gomes explained that the works will be carried out from today, taking advantage of the Easter school holidays and taking into account that “many people will be taking holidays”, so traffic disruption will be “minimal”.
On the other hand, he pointed to the real need to requalify the streets because “the floor would not last much longer”. “Hence this paving intervention”, he added.
Therefore, and according to the plan presented, work will begin today, lasting until April 12, in an area “over 10 thousand square meters, the equivalent of approximately a football field”.
The work will take place between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm, to “minimize the impact on road traffic during morning and afternoon rush hours”.
The intervention is divided into several phases and includes the paving of part of Rua dos Mártires (between the intersection of Câmara Municipal and Avenida Papa Francisco), Largo da República, Rua do Município and Rua José Alves Correia da Silva, from the roundabout on Avenida Marquês de Pombal to the Cruz d’Areia roundabout. Within this planning, Ricardo Gomes explained that there are three days in which the works will be stopped, and are related to the specific Easter period.
Also according to the councilor, there will be “identified deviations” on the public road, but Ricardo Gomes recommends that drivers identify “alternative routes so that they can avoid the area”. |
